Men aged 70 or even older can still enjoy sex and be sexually active. An Australian study conducted in 2009 involved more than 2.5 thousand Australian men aged 75-95, having a sexual partner. According to this study about a third of these older men still enjoys sex and was sexually active at least once a year. The study has made a surprising finding – according to the reports of the tested men, 1 in 10 men aged 90 to 95 had sex once a year or more.
Most of the men reported that they considered sex one of the most important things even in their years and wanted to have more sex. The most common reasons for not having sex are the lack of a partner and fatigue.
The study associated lack of sexual activity among older men with the following factors: increasing age, lower testosterone levels, a partner’s lack of interest in sex, or physical disability, osteoporosis, prostate cancer, diabetes, use of depression drugs, and use of some blood pressure drugs (beta-blockers).
The researches consider that health disorders are the main reason why geriatrics are sexually inactive. The males having no or minor health problems reported to be more sexually active than those who suffered from diabetes, high blood pressure or heart diseases.
It was also suggested that hormone therapy can help to improve sexual desire and activity in older men. The researchers concluded that males wishing to keep their sexual activity longer should maintain general health, having regular physical activity, eating healthy foods and treat the existing diseases properly.
